ECHS Club Rush

Today at lunch we held our annual club rush.  Students from each club discussed the club activities and signed up new members.

Here is a description of each club:

Academic Decathlon

Academic Decathlon (Aca Deca) is a competitive academic club that meets every Tuesday at lunch.  It focuses on one subject or time period each year. This topic is split into seven basic areas: Art, Literature, Music, Economics, Math, Science, and Social Science.  At the end of the year, a test is taken on each of these areas, plus a test containing some information from each area. In addition, a speech and interview are conducted.  If your scores are high enough, you’ll be able to earn medals. This year, we’ll be focusing on health. Thus, if you’re interested in becoming a nurse, doctor or psychologist, this club will help boost your application with colleges, especially if you win a medal in the competition.  In previous years, the topics were World War II, Africa, and the 60’s, so expect topics like those in the future.

Art Club

Welcome all to the Art Club!  Art Club is an amazing club that welcomes all.  For those that are wishing for a place where they can freely create art, paint, sketch, and more, art club is there.  This year, we plan to do so much more for art and our members. We hope to have guest speakers and art shows, as well.  Present all your creative pieces and express your love of art to others. Come on by and join! Meeting are Mondays during lunch in 1626.

Drama Club

Drama Club is a club for students interested in different aspects of the theatre arts.  Club members work on memorizing, directing, and performing a variety of different length works including: monologues, short scenes, one-act works, and short plays.  Drama Club may produce short videos of their work. Club members may also gain experience with some technical aspects of the theatre arts such as stage make-up or costume design.  Recent works of Drama club include musical works such as an ECHS Improv Show, Act 1 of the Very Potter Musical, Scenes from Grease, and an abbreviated production of Lion King. Meetings are in 307 on Thursdays.  First meeting is on Thursday August 29th.

GSA

Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA): Come join a new club providing a safe and supportive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT+) students as well as their cisgender heterosexual allies.  GSA has goal of educating members of the Early College High School and broader Solano Community College communities on issues related to Gender and Sexuality that affect the LGBT+ community. Meetings are in 307 on the First Wednesday and Third Friday.  First meeting on Friday August 30th.

Honor Society

Membership in the National Honor Society (NHS) is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a high school student. Our chapter strives to give practical meaning to the Society’s standards of scholarship, service, leadership and character. These are the ideals considered when selecting students. National Honor Society is a club that meets the first Friday of the month in Room 305 and it’s where intellectual young minds come together for the purpose of bettering the community. We are entering our second year of having a National Honor Society at ECHS. During our first year we held a donation drive for the SPCA, which is an animal shelter. This year, we hope to continue our excellence as a school and as a community by participating in more community service activities. We hope you strongly consider applying to ECHS National Honor Society and would love to see what you may be able to contribute to the club.

H.O.P.E. Club

Are you interested in promoting a Happy, Open minded, Positive, Environment?  The H.O.P.E. Club is for anyone who might feel stressed or not able to carry the strain of everyday life in high school. We all have responsibilities that weigh us down and we are here to show that you don't have to do it alone. The purpose of the club is to help students de-stress and learn tips to help manage their stress; we will do things such as aromatherapy, therapy slime, and so much more. We will also conduct school-wide initiatives to promote mental and emotional wellness. Meeting are Thursdays during lunch starting August 29th in Mrs. Nance’s room 305.

Key Club

Key Club is a student-led organization that encourages leadership through serving others and helps build character along with morale. It meets weekly on Wednesdays in Room 306. The core values of Key Club International are leadership, character building, caring and inclusiveness. In Key Club, our goal is to organize events that fundraise money for charity, which is sponsored by the Kiwani International. Key Club revolves around helping others and creating volunteer opportunities for students. Through the club, time management and discipline are of the essence. Key Club encourages interactive, social situations that push for people to meet others which prepares high schoolers for the adult world. Key Club allows for high school students to also have an invaluable experience that they will cherish.

Leadership

ECHS Leadership is a class that meets every morning during zero period and is Early College High School’s form of student government. Throughout the year, students will be involved in planning and implementing activities for ECHS such as elections, rallies, monthly events, Spirit Week, student/staff recognition, community service drives and more. Leadership students will also be responsible for mentoring freshmen and offering them support during their first year at ECHS. The class gives students the opportunity to polish and develop their leadership skills through student government sessions, workshops, leadership camps, and school activities. The ultimate goal of ECHS Leadership is to build community and school spirit within Early College High School.

Robotics

Robotics is a club that teaches you modern programming languages such as C++ in order to make your robot do what you want it to. Our club works with robots known as Linkbots at every meeting to practice our programming skills. Through programming, we command Linkbots to do specific tasks as needed. We meet once a week on Tuesdays in Mrs Staggs’ room during lunch. At the end of the year, we take all the programming that we’ve learned throughout the year to complete in an annual competition at UC Davis.
